PRIVATE CATHAY’S SECRET
The sun beamed down from high in the sky as young Cathay stood at the door of the smokehouse, a bundle containing all her possessions thrown over one shoulder. In the opposite hand she clasped a few biscuits and a slab of fat back her mama, Martha, had stuffed into a sack for her to take with her. Martha was not much at showing outward affection. All Martha's love was stuffed with the food in that sack. She stood at one side with her hands folded under her apron. Her head bowed as if in prayer. Martha pushed Cathay toward the group that moved toward the wagons; wagons that would take them to who knows where?
“There’s no future for you here, gal. Just remember to keep your own counsel.”
Cathay reached into her apron pocket and fingered the tin soldier nestled there. No one knew of the bit of home she was taking away with her, and she thought of her desire to become like the military figures in Master Joseph's room. She had no idea then that her fantasy might come true, but not the way she intended.
